The Reading Festival is held at Readings in the United Kingdom. It is one of the most popular and the oldest music festivals running successfully till date. It is run by Festival Republic. The festival has various events that take place. It started out and is a derivative of the ‘National Jazz Festival’ which was formulated by Harold Pendleton and was initially held in the year 1961. This event was basically an inspiration from events from America.

In the 70’s, the festival included genres like prog rock, blues and heavy metal. It experimented with punk rock in the year 1978 when various bands like Penetration showcased their music. During this period the festival presented various rock bands.

In the year 1980, the local council successfully banned the festival by repossessing the festival location for the development and refused to issue licenses for any alternative for the festival to take place. It was a very big set back to the fans of the Reading festival.

During the late 80’s, the popularity of the festival started to decline due to making the festival move in the direction of mainstream commercial pop. But the situation was stabilized by Mean Fiddler who took over the control of the festival and transformed the whole image of the festival. Since then the festival has not looked back and has gained.
